Commercial acetylene possesses a distinct garlic-like odor due to trace impurities such as phosphine (PH₃) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S).

History: Discovered in 1836 by Edmund Davy and named “acétylène” in 1860 by French chemist Marcellin Berthelot.
Production: Industrially manufactured via the hydrolysis of calcium carbide (CaC₂) at extreme temperatures (~2000°C) or partial combustion of methane (CH₄):
CaC₂ + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + C₂H₂↑

🛡️ Safety & Handling Regulations
- Operating Pressure: Working pressure must not exceed 101 kPa (15 psig) to prevent explosive decomposition.
- Storage in Solution: Dissolved in acetone or dimethylformamide within cylinders packed with porous mass.
- Upright Position: Cylinders must remain upright during transport and operation to prevent solvent leakage.
- Avoid Copper Fittings: Acetylene reacts with pure copper to form explosive acetylides; copper piping is strictly prohibited.
