WELDING & SOLDERING TECHNOLOGIES
⚡ 1. Soft Soldering
Soft soldering is used to solder electronic components onto circuit boards, make general electrical connections, and solder plumbing joints between copper pipe and copper connectors. Solder is an alloy of tin and other metals (lead-free options are common nowadays) with a low melting point, typically melted using an electric or gas soldering iron.
Three Fundamental Rules of Soldering:
- All surfaces must be clean (free of grease or dirt).
- Both parts must be hot so the solder will flow towards the heat source.
- Flux must be used to clean the surface and encourage the solder to flow evenly.
🔥 2. Hard Soldering & Brazing
Hard Soldering: Involves soldering with brass or silver alloys at much higher temperatures using a blowtorch. Surfaces are cleaned, positioned closely together, and treated with borax flux. Heated to orange heat, brass/silver melts and flows into the narrow gap to form an extremely strong joint.
- Brazing: Primarily used for mild steel and copper joints.
- Silver Soldering: Melts at lower temperatures than brass but provides high strength on copper, brass, gilding metal, and silver.
🛠️ 3. Industrial Welding Techniques
Gas Welding (Oxy-Acetylene Welding):
Uses a gas torch burning a mixture of Oxygen and Acetylene. The intense high-temperature flame melts mild steel filler rods and the metal joint sides, creating a highly durable steel weld.
MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas) & Argon Arc Welding:
A form of electric arc welding where Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) shielding gas surrounds the arc to prevent oxidation of molten steel, yielding slag-free, clean welds. Argon arc welding uses Argon gas enabling welding of non-ferrous metals like aluminum. Widely used in automated robotic assembly lines.
Spot Welding & Seam Welding:
Resistance welding techniques used on sheet steel. Copper-tipped electrodes apply pressure and electrical current to melt metal at contact points. Seam welding uses wheel-shaped electrodes for continuous resistance welds, commonly controlled by assembly-line robots.
